Vibrations
Vibrations are a repeating back and forth motion of the particles of a substance when energy is put into the system
Transverse (Angular) Vibrations
- a to and fro motion along an arc of a circle
- the direction of motion is not in line with the direction of vibration
Longitudinal (Linear) Vibrations
- a to and fro motion in which the direction of motion is in line with the direction of vibration
Transverse (Angular) Vibrations

Longitudinal (Linear) Vibrations
- a to and fro motion in which the direction of motion is in line with the direction of vibration
The first and last example show a transverse vibration; the direction of motion is to the right and the direction of vibration is not. In the first it is up and down and in the last it is a circular rotation.
The second example shows a linear vibration. Both the direction of motion and vibration are left and right.
